Picturesque Kawah Ijen is the world’s largest highly acidic lake and is the site of a labor-intensive sulfur mining operation in which sulfur-laden baskets are hand-carried from 300 meters down the crater floor.
On December 18 2011,the alert status at Ijen volcano was raised to level 3 (from 4 level). Mount Kawah Ijen contains huge danger if it erupts as it threatens as many as 9,000 people living surround the volcano. The biggest threat of Mount Kawah Ijen is not hot cloud, flamed material launch or volcanic ash, but is within its volcanic lake containing 30 million metre cubic of water with deadly acid level.

Filmmaker Michael Glawogger‘s epic documentary Working Man’s Death, on physical labor in the twenty-first century, is streaming in 22-minute episodes on Al-Jazeera TV. “Ghosts” is the episode about Kawah Ijen can be seen from Tuesday, January 17/2011, at the following times GMT:
